Parry Sound Bikes is a full-service shop located in Parry Sound, Ontario. They offer year-round sales, service and rentals for bikes and e-bikes. In the winter, they also sell and service cross-country skis. Through community engagement, group rides and providing a welcoming atmosphere, Parry Sound Bikes has become a destination and gathering place for cyclists.
In 2017, Parry Sound Bikes moved into Parry Sound’s Old Firehall, a local landmark built in 1893 that had served as a firehall and later a museum for more than a century. The main door and upstairs door were both rotting and warped due to age, allowing drafts that could not be fixed with weather stripping. The “leaky” doors made the space less comfortable for staff and visitors and resulted in higher heating costs and more energy use and emissions than necessary.
With the Climate Action Microgrant, Parry Sound Bikes replaced their doors and improved the energy efficiency of their building. With the drafts eliminated, they’ve already seen cost savings on electricity and natural gas. Beyond the cost savings and environmental benefits, the upgrade improved and enhanced the heritage building which offers cultural value to the community.
