Walker Emulsions is a North American manufacturer of specialized water-based products, serving a wide array of industries including road construction and resurfacing, wood and lumber processing, insulation and mass timber, food packaging, and automotive. With expertise in custom emulsion solutions, they partner closely with clients to develop tailored formulations that meet specific performance and application needs.
Water is one of the main resources Walker Emulsions uses for production, both as a raw material and as a coolant. Their Burlington facility saw an opportunity to make their water resources go further. By repurposing three tanks and adding piping to connect them, they could recirculate water as a coolant and then use the warmed water as an input for wax and asphalt production.
The newly expanded water system is expected to save approximately 6,600 cubic meters of water per year, which makes up about 12.2% of the facility’s 2023 water footprint.
By reusing water that has absorbed waste heat (when used as a coolant) in processes that require warm water, this project reduces Walker’s water consumption and saves energy required to heat the water required for asphalt and wax emulsion production.
