Co-op Régionale was founded in 1951 by merging five Ontario co-ops. Rooted in community, it embraced the seven cooperative principles and evolved into a key regional economic player. Over the years, it adapted to changing needs, surviving fires, floods, a strike, and big-box competition.
Given the ongoing changes in refrigerant regulations and growing environmental concerns, the co-op determined that upgrading cooling systems would be cost-effective, environmentally responsible, and enhance energy efficiency and reduce long-term operational costs.
This project upgraded the walk-in refrigerator’s compressor to a newer, more energy-efficient model of refrigerator that uses refrigerants with lower Global Warming Potential (GWP).
The first month that the new equipment was in place, the co-op reduced energy demands by 300 kw/h. Advanced refrigerant systems are also equipped with better leak detection technology, and the co-op looks forward to minimizing refrigerant loss and reducing maintenance.
