As part of this commitment, Devour wanted to purchase lithium battery packs to heat some of their chafing dishes rather than using traditional fuels. These battery packs allow caterers to keep food safe and warm while reducing fuel costs and reducing GHG emissions.
The purchasing cost of the buffet warming system is high and prohibitive. The Climate Action Microgrant from Green Economy Calgary provided the financial support needed to transition toward more sustainable business practices.
Switching to lithium battery packs has cut their chafing fuel use by over half. This shift reduces operating expenses and waste, as they no longer dispose of the used canisters. Beyond the financial gains, moving to non-carbon heat sources eliminates indoor fire hazards and health risks for staff and guests.
