The Project

Crane & Timber Inc. is a Manitoba crane company offering innovative hoisting solutions. Started in 2020 by Ben & Ashley Rawluk, they saw an opportunity to provide new hoisting services using articulating boom cranes, also known as knuckle boom cranes. These cranes have much greater maneuverability compared with traditional boom trucks.

Worrying about their energy usage in a day and wanting to reduce their energy consumption where they can, they removed their 3/4 ton diesel pickup truck, which they use daily to drive around to look at jobs and pickup supplies and replaced it with a fully electric SUV.

Through the partnership between Manitoba Green Advantage and Green Economy Canada, Crane & Timber were able to access expert guidance, practical resources, and financial support allowing them to jump in and get first-hand experience with using an EV.

The Results

By switching from a diesel pickup truck to a fully electric car, Crane & Timber are expected to reduce their GHG emissions by 17 tonnes of C02e annually.

In addition to environmental benefits, they experience cost savings. Previously, they were averaging 120 litres of diesel per week, driving 500 km, for a cost of $230. With their EV, this has been reduced to $14 for the same 500 km distance. They are expecting to save approximately $10,000 annually, meaning this EV will pay for itself in under 7 years just from the avoided cost of diesel fuel.

I would say to go for it 100%. People talk about range anxiety and charging issues/concerns. Just do it, you’ll easily figure it out and love it. It’s one of the greatest things we did from an efficiency standpoint and now we’re looking at using battery packs for powering our cranes.
