The Women’s Interval Home of Sarnia and Lambton Inc. is a non-profit charitable organization established to provide emergency shelter and counselling services to abused women and their children in Sarnia-Lambton. They provide 24-hour emergency and short-term shelter, individual and group counselling, transitional services, child witness counselling services and Restorative Justice circle conferencing.
Inspired by a global awareness of the links between gender-based violence and environmental issues, Women’s Interval Home want to do their part to minimize their own environmental impact.
Staff flagged the use of plastic water bottles as a major source of waste; the facility went through as many as 1740 plastic single-use water bottles in a year, and wanted to provide a more sustainable alternative.
With funding from the Climate Action Microgrant, the Women’s Interval Home purchased an “off the shelf” water cooler for $2049, and had it professionally installed on budget and on schedule. Former Executive Director Jennifer Vansteenkiste described the process as “seamless.” This simple change eliminated 1740 single-use plastic water bottles annually from local recycling and landfill streams and will save this non-profit $388 a year in water bottles.
