D.A.S. (Durability. Accessibility. Sustainability) Concrete Countertops manufactures precast, polished concrete countertops, outdoor furnishings, and related products as a sustainable alternative to mainstream imported products.
While concrete and natural stone can be crushed and recycled, the reality is that most of it ends up in landfills. Knowing their local countertop shops send scrap materials to a dump that is running out of room, and hearing stories of “mountains” of granite cut-offs piled up in parts of Quebec where the stone industry is concentrated, D.A.S. saw an opportunity.
A jaw crusher would allow them to crush waste concrete, granite and quartz countertop cut-offs and recycled glass and re-use them as recycled aggregate in future concrete products.
After D.A.S. successfully sourced and installed a lab-sized jaw crusher, initial tests confirmed it was able to crush concrete and granite to use as aggregate. While the machine is only able to crush small quantities at a time, they are exploring modifications to increase capacity.
Now that they can crush their own concrete and other waste materials, they’re better able to divert waste from landfills (and reduce the emissions from transporting heavy waste to landfill), reduce the amount of new aggregate they use in any given product, and pursue new product development knowing they can recycle any test products that are not otherwise usable.
