The Women’s Interval Home of Sarnia and Lambton Inc. is a nonprofit charitable organization providing emergency shelter and counselling services to women and children who have experienced abuse. Services include a 24-hour crisis support line, transition and housing support services, child witness counselling services, groups and support for multiple towns throughout Lambton County.
The shelter struggled with a recurring issue; water faucets not being completely shut off in the washrooms. With hot water taps being left to run, they were dealing with wasted water and elevated energy costs.
With the support of the Climate Action Microgrant, the organization was able to install metered faucets with automatic shut-offs. The faucets are also set to a specific temperature, eliminating overuse of hot water.
With the automated taps fully installed by the end of 2024, staff compared water use in the first 7 months of 2025 with the first 7 months of 2024 and saw a 7% reduction in water usage. The automatic shut off also prevents issues of overflowing sinks and water damage to the building. Staff look forward to reducing the need to frequently monitor the bathrooms; one less duty that would otherwise pull focus away from working with their clients.
