With growing passenger and cargo operations, Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport (YQM) plays a key role in connecting Atlantic Canada to the world.
Like any airport around the world, YQM passengers participate in the familiar ritual of realizing they can’t finish that orange juice they bought an hour ago, or discovering they accidentally threw a bottle of sunscreen into their carry-on while they are in the lineup for security.
Often, these containers end up in recycling, contaminating all of the recyclables. With the support of the Climate Action Microgrant, the Greater Moncton International Airport Authority (GMIAA) decided to invest in a liquids disposal bin to give passengers an easy, clean way to dispose of liquids properly and keep the other waste and recycling streams clean.
GMIAA estimates that between 16 and 33 metric tonnes of liquid will be disposed of annually using the new bin. This simple measure also improves terminal cleanliness and reduces janitorial workload related to leaky containers. The bin enhances the overall passenger experience by providing a convenient and hygienic way to dispose of liquids, reinforcing the airport’s commitment to both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
